I have this problem that my bitcoin-qt crashes at random times as I have reported in my other question (bitcoin-qt just terminates after an hour without big fanfare).
The situation has improved after installing v29.0.0 so that I have hope that I will b able to catch up with the blockchain (three and a half years back now.)
To make things faster I now check in a cron script if bitcoin-qt has died and try to restart it in that was the case.
But ubuntu is throwing me a curveball: Starting this QT application from a cron script is not easy!
I am getting the following error:
qt.qpa.xcb: could not connect to display
qt.qpa.plugin: Could not load the Qt platform plugin “xcb” in “” even though it was found.

Available platform plugins are: minimal, xcb.
I did set the DISPLAY variable in my cron file and have confirmed that it is set when bitcoin-qt is starting.
I am running out of linux-steam and hope there is somebody out there with some more.
