Key Takeaways

  • WNBA posted and removed footage of a $400 Reese-Bueckers wager on their own game.
  • Atlanta beat Dallas 82-81, leaving Bueckers owing $400 on a game she played in.
  • Neither player faces discipline despite the new CBA’s wagering prohibition.

A joke inside a rule that bans attempts

The WNBA posted and quickly deleted a video Wednesday showing Atlanta Dream forward Angel Reese and Dallas Wings guard Paige Bueckers agreeing to a $400 wager on their upcoming game. The money came from a WNBA event: at an All-Star practice session in Chicago, Team Coop coach Becky Hammon ran a shooting competition paying out $100 bills, and Reese won $400.

Both players had money at risk. “I’m gonna see you next week on Wednesday,” Reese said while holding the four bills. “If y’all win, you get the $400.” Bueckers replied, “And if we lose, then you get to keep it” – to which Reese answered, “No, you owe me $400.” Approached by the league’s social media team before Wednesday’s game, Bueckers said, “We did? At night?” then confirmed: “Bet, I’m standing on that.”

The league uploaded the exchange ahead of the Dream-Wings game with the caption “We did? 😂 Paige Bueckers on the bet she made with Angel Reese at All-Star Weekend on tonight’s matchup.”

Atlanta rallied from 15 points down to win 82-81, with Reese finishing on 22 points and 12 rebounds and Bueckers on 16 points and six assists. Reese told reporters afterward, “I’ll be requesting my Apple Pay after this,” and appeared to reference the wager again with a “cuatrocientos” hashtag on X. There is no evidence that either player altered her performance or attempted to influence the result, and the wager gave both the ordinary incentive to win.

A league source told ESPN that neither player will face disciplinary action. The WNBA said Thursday that the post was intended to be lighthearted but “missed the mark,” adding that players receive annual training on league wagering rules and that the matter was addressed internally. The league did not concede that a violation occurred – its statement treats the post as the error, not the bet.

The WNBA’s newly agreed collective bargaining agreement draws a wider line than completed betting. Article XIV, Section 5 allows the commissioner to punish a player found to have wagered directly or indirectly, or to have offered or attempted to wager anything of value on the outcome, score or any other aspect of a WNBA game. Available penalties include a fine, suspension, dismissal or permanent disqualification from the league.

The episode leaves the league distinguishing between the literal wording of its rule and the intent behind the players’ exchange. The WNBA treated the conversation as joking conduct but also removed its own video, warned that such discussions can have negative consequences even when intended as a joke, and said it would reinforce the policy with the two players.

The timing adds to the reputational problem. Kalshi and Polymarket, both registered with the Commodity Futures Trading Commission as designated contract markets, list WNBA contracts covering game outcomes, championship and conference winners, season win totals and league awards including MVP and Rookie of the Year. Crypto.com carries WNBA markets as well. Prediction-market volumes across the sector hit a record $44.8 billion in June. The widening menu means casual player comments about wagers now sit alongside real markets tied to their games.

Player associations across five major U.S. leagues have already warned the CFTC that individual-performance and negative-outcome markets can create integrity risks and expose athletes to bettor harassment. Exchanges have responded by building screening infrastructure – Kalshi has partnered with Sportradar for official league data and integrity tools. The WNBA incident involves no allegation of manipulated play, but it shows how quickly an informal exchange can collide with policies designed for an expanding betting environment.

The league’s decision avoids treating a joke between two stars like an integrity offense. It also leaves the harder boundary unresolved: when a rule expressly covers offers and attempted wagers, determining whether a recorded agreement was serious may depend less on what the players said than on how the commissioner chooses to interpret it.
