In Bitcoin ETF news today, Hashdex is pulling the plug on its spot BTC ETF (NYSE Arca: DEFI). The fund held just $14.7M in assets as of July 30, 2026, according to Hashdex’s official press release on GlobeNewswire.

It claims to be well below the scale needed to sustain a competitive crypto ETF in today’s market. Trading ends on NYSE Arca on August 17, and remaining shareholders will receive a cash distribution on or about August 28.

This news dropped as BTC USD is trading for around $63,400, up +1.3% over the past 24 hours after briefly falling to $62,000 yesterday. Daily trading volume sits at $25.8Bn, up from $21Bn yesterday.

Hashdex Asset Management has confirmed it will shutter its Bitcoin ETF, which trades under the DEFI ticker on NYSE Arca, with the final trading day set for August 17.

The fund held approximately $14.7 million in assets under management as of late July 30.

Bitcoin ETF News: What Happens to Investors’ DEFI Shares

The mechanics of this ETF liquidation are fairly straightforward. Shareholders who sell before or on August 17 receive the prevailing market price through their broker, with standard brokerage charges applying. Those who hold through the close of the last trading day will receive a pro-rata cash distribution, not Bitcoin, once the fund sells its holdings.

According to Hashdex’s 424B3 prospectus supplement filed with the SEC, asset sales begin August 18. The fund will stop tracking its benchmark during this wind-down window, meaning the share price will increasingly reflect a cash position rather than Bitcoin exposure.

The cash payout around August 28 will reflect the net proceeds after selling the fund’s Bitcoin, deducting transaction costs, and accounting for Bitcoin price movements during the liquidation period, which Hashdex explicitly flagged as potentially substantial.

One practical note for holders: bid-ask spreads on DEFI may widen as the August 17 deadline approaches and liquidity thins. Selling ahead of the last trading day avoids any execution-price risk that comes with a market that knows the fund is closing.

August 17: Last trading day on NYSE Arca; creation orders from authorized participants also halt.

August 28: Cash distribution paid pro-rata to remaining shareholders.

Why a $14.7M Bitcoin ETF Cannot Survive in Today’s Market

The Bitcoin ETF closure reflects a structural reality that has hardened since US spot Bitcoin ETFs launched: fixed costs, custody, compliance, and exchange listing fees do not scale down proportionally with a fund’s assets.

A fund sitting at $14.7M generates minimal fee revenue at any reasonable expense ratio, making it essentially impossible to cover operating expenses without the sponsor subsidizing losses indefinitely.

Asset flows in the spot Bitcoin ETF market have concentrated heavily in the largest, most liquid products, leaving smaller funds competing for a shrinking pool of undecided capital.

Retail and institutional investors both gravitate toward tighter spreads and deeper order books, advantages that compound as a fund grows, and disappear at sub-$100M scale. The dynamic mirrors what dominant issuers like BlackRock have demonstrated in capturing the lion’s share of Bitcoin ETF inflows.

Hashdex cited assets under management, trading liquidity, operating costs, investor interest, and strategic fit within its index-based product range as the factors driving the decision, according to the company’s GlobeNewswire announcement.

The DEFI ETF is also the sole series of Hashdex Commodities Trust, meaning the trust itself dissolves once the liquidation concludes, per the SEC prospectus supplement.

Hashdex Is Not Leaving the US Market

In other Bitcoin ETF news, the shutdown is a product-line trim, not a retreat. Hashdex said it continues to manage over $200 million in assets for U.S. investors, anchored by its multi-asset Nasdaq CME Crypto Index ETF (ticker: NCIQ), which remains active.

The firm has also been expanding its US sales and distribution team, signaling a focus on products with broader market reach than a single-asset spot fund.

The broader lesson here is one the low-volume ETF environment made clear early on: a popular underlying asset does not guarantee a viable fund structure. Bitcoin is not the problem. Scale is. For shareholders still holding DEFI, the clock runs to August 17.
