Key Takeaways

  • Jeonbuk Bank is Korea’s first regional lender to use Ripple Payments.
  • The platform is designed to provide settlement within seconds or minutes.
  • The agreement extends Ripple’s Korean footprint across payments, custody, and tokenization.

Jeonbuk Bank Targets Faster Business Remittances

Ripple announced Aug. 18 that Jeonbuk Bank will deploy Ripple Payments for cross-border remittances, making it Korea’s first regional bank to use the platform. The Jeonbuk Bank payments partnership is intended to provide faster and more transparent transfers for import-export companies, technology startups, and online content creators that routinely send funds across borders.

The platform operates continuously and is designed to settle payments within seconds or minutes, while traditional routes can pass through multiple intermediary banks and take days to complete. Ripple Payments supports transactions across more than 60 markets while combining payment messaging, liquidity sourcing, compliance capabilities, and settlement infrastructure for banks, payment providers, and financial technology companies.

Ripple Managing Director for Asia Pacific Fiona Murray said:

“This partnership with Jeonbuk Bank reflects the growing momentum we are seeing across Korea’s institutional financial sector, where leading financial institutions are actively building out their digital asset capabilities and seeking infrastructure partners they can rely on for the long term.”

“Regional banks play a vital role in the real economy. As the first regional bank in Korea to deploy Ripple Payments, Jeonbuk Bank is extending near real-time cross-border settlement directly to the businesses it serves, and this is a meaningful step for Korea’s broader financial ecosystem,” the executive added.

Ripple Extends Its Institutional Payments Strategy

Separately, Ripple’s broader institutional strategy includes the XRP Ledger, its native digital asset XRP, and the RLUSD stablecoin. The XRP Ledger confirms transactions through validator consensus rather than mining, typically recording ledger updates within seconds and supporting payment, tokenization, and digital-asset issuance functions.

Chief Executive Officer Brad Garlinghouse said in June that businesses Ripple acquired process approximately $16 trillion in annual payments and clearing activity. He said digital assets represented close to zero percent of that volume, framing the gap as an opportunity to expand XRP settlement across institutional workflows.

That institutional strategy aligns with comments from Ripple Middle East and Africa Managing Director Reece Merrick, who compared crypto payments with early online commerce in a June 24 post on X. Merrick argued that infrastructure and confidence develop before broader adoption. His comparison linked infrastructure maturity with wider use.

Institutional Use Moves Beyond Remittances

Payments represent one part of Ripple’s broader institutional expansion, which also includes brokerage, custody, and market infrastructure. An April integration gave Ripple Prime clients access to bitcoin options on Bullish and permitted RLUSD for options trading, connecting the brokerage’s customers with spot, futures, perpetuals, and regulated crypto derivatives markets.

The shift toward faster digital settlement across traditional markets is also attracting closer scrutiny from policymakers. Federal Reserve Governor Lisa Cook said in May that tokenization could improve settlement times, recordkeeping, automation, and collateral mobility. Cook also warned that 24-hour tokenized markets can introduce liquidity and operational risks, including faster runs, market interconnectedness, smart-contract failures, and cyberattacks.

JB Jeonbuk Bank President Park Choon-won said:

“With this partnership with Ripple, JB Jeonbuk Bank is ready to move beyond its role as a regional bank and emerge as a digital finance leader that meets global standards.”

“This partnership will become a new growth engine for the bank, and we will lead innovation that reshapes the financial paradigm, going beyond the adoption of new technology,” the executive added.

Korea Balances Innovation With Operational Controls

As Ripple expands across Korean banks and insurers, authorities are simultaneously tightening operational safeguards for domestic virtual-asset platforms. Following an erroneous Bithumb payout, the Financial Services Commission said exchanges would need real-time ledger-to-wallet balance reconciliation every five minutes, automated kill-switch criteria, monthly external verification, and stronger controls for high-risk transactions. The measures apply to virtual-asset exchanges, not Jeonbuk Bank’s cross-border remittance service.

In a separate April 14 initiative, Ripple’s partnership with Kyobo Life Insurance will test regulated tokenized government bond transactions through Ripple Custody. The Kyobo Life settlement project will assess technical and regulatory feasibility, including whether blockchain can reduce the traditional two-business-day settlement period.

About two weeks later, Kbank signed an April 27 partnership with Ripple to test blockchain-based overseas remittances and a digital-wallet proof of concept. The pilot will assess transaction stability and on-chain transfers with partners in the United Arab Emirates and Thailand through Ripple’s Palisade wallet infrastructure.
