Coinbase Investor Class Action Can Move Forward, Federal Judge Rules

Key Takeaways

  • Anthropic’s Benjamin Mann says AI weakens elite-school advantages built 10-20 years ago.
  • OpenAI’s Sam Altman signals curiosity and judgment may gain value as AI handles more technical work.
  • Mann’s 2025 Montessori bet puts autonomy and creativity ahead of test-score competition.

Silicon Valley has long treated elite diplomas as a shortcut to talent, but Benjamin Mann has started to sound unimpressed. The Anthropic co-founder, who left OpenAI to help launch a rival AI lab, argues that as models absorb more of the technical grind, the old markers of academic prestige carry less weight. What rises in their place are traits that do not fit neatly on a transcript: curiosity, empathy, and creativity. It is a view shaping how Mann thinks about his own child’s education, with Montessori style autonomy looking more like career prep than a test score arms race.

Rethinking education in the age of AI

Every so often, a throwaway line from Silicon Valley lands with unusual weight. In a podcast conversation, an AI founder talked less about model roadmaps and more about parenting, and the result felt like a quiet memo to the rest of us. If the people building frontier systems are reconsidering school, it is worth asking what they see coming.

That founder was Benjamin Mann, a co-founder of Anthropic and one of the engineers who previously worked at OpenAI. Speaking on Lenny Rachitsky’s podcast in an interview published July 20, 2025, Mann said that 10 or 20 years ago he would have aimed for elite schools and stacked extracurriculars for his daughter. Today, he framed it as secondary.

The fading value of traditional academic skills

Mann’s argument is not anti-learning. It is more about what learning “wins” in a labor market increasingly shaped by AI systems that can already draft code, summarize research, and generate designs on command. When technical competence becomes easier to rent by the minute, the premium shifts to the person deciding what to build and why.

That lands close to a theme Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI, has voiced repeatedly: the hard part is choosing the right questions, not memorizing answers. Mann also pointed to the traits he wants to nurture: happiness, empathy, curiosity, kindness. Those are not soft add-ons in this view. They are the upstream inputs that steer powerful tools.

The rise of alternative educational models

For Mann, the rethink shows up in a concrete choice. He has said he opted for a Montessori-style school for his daughter, an approach that prioritizes autonomy, self-directed exploration, and learning by doing rather than racing through standardized milestones. In practice, it is a bet that internal motivation will outperform external scorekeeping.

In the US, this shift is showing up in small ways that add up: parents touring project-based programs, charter schools pitching “student agency,” and edtech startups selling tools that look less like test prep and more like creativity scaffolding. The goal is not to dodge rigor. It is to aim rigor at judgment, collaboration, and taste.

Creativity and curiosity as future drivers

Industry leaders keep circling back to the same point. Jensen Huang, CEO of Nvidia, has argued that as AI handles more technical work, some skills (including routine programming) may matter less than people expect. That does not make humans obsolete. It changes what we are for.

So here is the lingering question for families and employers: if AI can produce competent output on demand, how do you identify the people who can set direction? Mann’s answer is surprisingly old-fashioned. Develop the human traits that machines still struggle to imitate, then use AI as a multiplier, not a substitute.
