SHRINCS Draft Targets Smaller Post-Quantum BTC Signatures: Is Bitcoin Now Quantum Proof?

Key Takeaways

  • California holds $15.485B across 84M unclaimed properties for nearly 39M residents.
  • Texas holds $10.5B as estimates show 1 in 10 Americans may have unclaimed property.
  • California returned $534M in 2024/25 as Malia Cohen urges residents to search for funds.

California is sitting on $15,485,000,000 in lost assets and money, according to the California State Controller’s Office, spread across more than 84 million individual properties. State Controller Malia Cohen says that pile is “waiting to be returned to nearly 39 million Californians,” but the state does not automatically send it back, leaving residents to hunt down what is already theirs. The money often starts in mundane places like dormant bank accounts, overpaid bills, uncashed checks, or abandoned safe deposit boxes, and it clusters heavily in Southern California, with Los Angeles County alone holding over $5.3 billion. Other states are awash in forgotten cash too, including about $10.5 billion in Texas and roughly $4.8 billion in Ohio, and Nexstar estimates 1 in 10 Americans has unclaimed property.

Every few months, a reader emails me the same kind of story: a forgotten old paycheck, a utility deposit from a long-closed apartment, a relative’s account no one knew existed. This week, the numbers behind those “wait, really?” moments got hard to ignore. California alone is sitting on a pile of money that belongs to other people, and it is bigger than many tech IPO war chests.

The staggering $15 billion waiting to be claimed in California

At the center of it is the California State Controller’s Office, which now lists $15,485,000,000 in unclaimed assets on its State Controller’s Office website. California State Controller Malia Cohen has framed it bluntly: “My office is safeguarding more than $15 billion in unclaimed property, representing over 84 million individual properties waiting to be returned to nearly 39 million Californians,” she said.

There’s a catch that matters in a state obsessed with “set it and forget it” automation. Unlike many other states, California does not automatically return unclaimed property to residents, which a CBS News analysis noted can leave even institutions like children’s hospitals owed more than $1 million sitting in the system.

This isn’t just a California quirk, it’s a national pattern

Per a Nexstar Media Group report, an estimated 1 in 10 Americans has unclaimed property. California’s numbers stand out, but it’s not alone: Texas holds about $10.5 billion statewide in unclaimed property, including nearly $2 billion in the Houston area, according to more than $10 billion in reporting from local TV.

In Ohio, the pot is smaller but still enormous. The Ohio Department of Commerce’s Division of Unclaimed Funds is safeguarding about $4.8 billion, alongside an ad campaign featuring Lt. Governor Jim Tressel urging residents to check whether they are on the list.

Where “lost money” really comes from, and where it clusters

Unclaimed property is less about pirate treasure and more about modern life: dormant bank accounts, uncashed checks, stocks and bonds, utility deposits, and wages that never made it out of payroll systems. Cohen has also pointed to abandoned safe deposit box contents, saying, “You see birth certificates; you have found baby teeth, baby shoes,” she said.

In California, the money clusters where people and jobs cluster. Southern California leads by a wide margin, with Los Angeles County holding over $5.3 billion, followed by Orange County with over $1 billion, plus sizable totals in Riverside, San Bernardino, and Ventura counties.

How claims work, and why the state is nudging you to look

California’s push for awareness has been formalized. Cohen, joined by Assemblymember Avelino Valencia, announced February 2026 as Unclaimed Property Month after the adoption of Assembly House Resolution 79.

If you want to check, Californians can search via the State Controller’s site or MissingMoney.com, then file a claim. And the system does pay out: California reports more than $534 million was returned in fiscal year 2024/25.
