Key Takeaways

  • Wallet Pay connects participating wallets with Mastercard’s network.
  • The portfolio supports contactless, QR, online, and cross-border payments.
  • Transfers can reach more than 200 countries and territories in 150 currencies.

Mastercard Connects Local Wallets to Global Payments

Digital wallet users could gain broader payment access without abandoning the local services they already use. Mastercard announced Wallet Pay on Sept. 10 as a portfolio that helps participating wallet providers connect with contactless terminals, QR code systems, online checkout services, and cross-border payment channels.

The portfolio gives wallet operators access to Mastercard’s acceptance infrastructure while allowing them to retain their own consumer-facing platforms. Its functions include card issuance, in-person and online acceptance, and transfers between cards, wallets, or bank accounts across more than 200 countries and territories and 150 currencies.

“Digital wallets have rapidly evolved into robust, multi-service platforms, now serving over 4.3 billion users worldwide,” Mastercard said, elaborating:

“With global usage set to top 6 billion by 2030, Mastercard is introducing Mastercard Wallet Pay, a global portfolio of solutions designed to foster interoperability and innovation for digital wallets across contactless (NFC), QR codes and online digital payments.”

The digital wallet market already contained an estimated 4.4 billion users during 2025, according to Juniper Research. The research projects 35% user growth over five years and identifies buy now, pay later services, virtual cards, digital identity, rewards, gamification, and super-app features as important ways for wallet providers to differentiate. It also recommends integrating multiple wallet and payment types while expanding services for underbanked consumers in emerging markets.

Major participants include Alipay+, Axian, CRED, DaviPlata, Mercado Pago, MTN, and TenPay Global. Alipay+ is also supporting connections for AlipayHK, Clip, GCash, KakaoPay, TNG eWallet, and TrueMoney. Mastercard states that Alipay+ connects more than 50 e-wallets and banking apps, along with over 10 national payment systems.

Wallet Providers Compete for Global Reach

As adoption expands, wallet providers face pressure to offer services beyond local merchant payments, including international transfers, online purchases, contactless transactions, virtual cards, rewards, and broader financial products.

Wallet Pay is designed for stored-value services, which maintain funds inside an account for later purchases or transfers. Providers can use Mastercard’s cloud-based payment technology without rebuilding their underlying infrastructure, according to the company. They may also introduce credit, debit, or prepaid card programs.

Consumers already use digital wallets for several different payment methods, including bank cards, QR codes, and cryptocurrency transfers. People using bitcoin for purchases or cross-border transfers generally initiate payments through a wallet by scanning a QR code or entering a recipient address, although Mastercard Wallet Pay is a separate commercial portfolio rather than a cryptocurrency product.

“Wallets are gateways to the digital economy and launchpads for broader financial services,” Mastercard Chief Product Officer Jorn Lambert stated. He added that the portfolio is intended to improve interoperability and user experience.

Mastercard Broadens Its Digital Payment Infrastructure

The Wallet Pay launch extends a wider Mastercard strategy spanning conventional payments, digital wallets, and blockchain-based settlement. The company announced plans in June to support six regulated stablecoins for settlement across eight blockchain networks, giving participating issuers and payment processors access to intraday, weekend, and holiday processing.

Mastercard has also assembled payment companies, financial institutions, and cryptocurrency businesses around infrastructure development. Its global Crypto Partner Program includes more than 85 firms working on blockchain-powered payments, remittances, business transfers, and settlement, reflecting the company’s effort to connect emerging financial systems with established commerce networks.

Earlier infrastructure initiatives included Mastercard Crypto Credential and the Multi-Token Network, which support identity, compliance, and settlement functions for blockchain-based transactions. The company has argued that stablecoin adoption depends on interoperable payment infrastructure capable of integrating digital assets with systems consumers and businesses already use.

Wallet Pay applies a similar interoperability strategy to mainstream digital wallets, linking local platforms with Mastercard’s international network. The portfolio allows more than 3.7 billion Mastercard credentials to connect with participating wallets while extending those services to hundreds of millions of physical acceptance locations and digital access points worldwide.
