NYSE Might Implement Tokenized Trading Solutions On Top of Avalanche
The New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) has offered a glimpse into the inner workings of its upcoming digital tokenized securities trading platform.
During a Fireside chat with Ava Labs President Charley Cooper at the Avalanche Summit New York, Michael Blaugrund, Vice President of Strategic Initiatives at Intercontinental Exchange (ICE), NYSE’s parent company, said the company was considering Avalanche as the chain for launching an upcoming tokenized securities trading engine.
While he did not assure that Avalanche would be the blockchain chosen for this initiative, Blaugrund stressed that, as they evaluated alternatives for enabling 24/7 trading using decentralized technology, Avalanche “checks a lot of those boxes” for them.
“As we move towards the prospective launch of our regulated ATS, we are looking very carefully at whether Avalanche could be that solution,” Blaugrund concluded, disclosing that their technology and engineering teams were working “very closely.”
Avalanche would allow NYSE to spin off its own L1 chain, enabling it to define its own operating rules, including KYC procedures and other details, and easing some of the compliance logistics linked to onchain securities trading.
NYSE, which manages over 2.5 billion shares and processes over 500 billion messages, announced the development of its 24/7 tokenized trading platform as part of a broader digital strategy that might include the in January, revealing that it would seek regulatory approval for this pivotal step in the company’s modernization push.
At the time, Blaugrund highlighted that “supporting tokenized securities is a pivotal step in ICE’s strategy to operate on-chain market infrastructure for trading, settlement, custody, and capital formation in the new era of global finance.”
Blaugrund’s statements come as the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) approved its Innovation Exception, allowing tokenized stocks to be traded on decentralized finance exchanges, with some limitations for so-called Tokenized Securities Venues (TSVs) that must comply with operational rules and reporting safeguards.
