Key Takeaways

  • Solana activated its major Alpenglow network upgrade on Oct. 21, promising 99% faster transaction finality.
  • The new Votor consensus system aims to reduce finality times from 12.8 seconds to approximately 150 milliseconds.
  • Alpenglow could improve Solana’s appeal for DeFi, trading, and payments, with a second upgrade called Rotor planned for later.

Solana’s Big Step Forward

The upgrade, which Solana announced had gone live on its mainnet, replaces the blockchain’s existing consensus mechanism with a new system designed to finalize transactions in approximately 150 milliseconds, compared with the previous 12.8 seconds.

Billed as the “biggest consensus upgrade in Solana’s history,” the improvement could make Solana substantially faster for applications requiring near-instant settlement, including decentralized finance (DeFi), cryptocurrency trading, and blockchain-based payments.

Alpenglow represents the culmination of approximately 18 months of development by Solana-focused engineering firm Anza and other contributors. The upgrade fundamentally changes how the network’s validators reach agreement on transactions, replacing the TowerBFT consensus system that Solana has used since its launch in 2020.

Under the previous system, validators submitted votes as transactions recorded directly on the blockchain. That process consumed network capacity and required multiple rounds of confirmations before transactions became irreversible.

Alpenglow introduces a new voting protocol called Votor, which allows validators to communicate votes directly with one another rather than recording each vote onchain. Those votes are aggregated into certificates that can establish consensus in just one or two rounds, substantially reducing the time required to finalize transactions.

The Solana Foundation has described the upgrade as a roughly 99% improvement in finality speed, although actual performance will depend on network conditions.

As Bitcoin.com News previously reported, Anza scheduled the upgrade to activate on October 21 following testing on Solana’s testnet and devnet networks in September.

The migration was designed to occur within a single slot after a transition period of approximately 18 minutes, during which validators would prepare to move from TowerBFT to Votor. The process required participation from validators representing at least 82% of staked SOL before the network could complete its transition.

Despite the sweeping changes to consensus, Alpenglow does not alter how Solana executes transactions, meaning existing applications, smart contracts, and transaction fee mechanisms remain intact.

The upgrade also introduces changes to how network activity is measured. Because validator votes no longer appear as ordinary blockchain transactions, reported transaction counts could decline without any corresponding reduction in actual user activity.

Wednesday’s activation represents only the first phase of the broader Alpenglow initiative. A second component, called Rotor, is designed to overhaul how blocks are distributed among validators, potentially improving network efficiency further. Rotor does not yet have a scheduled activation date.

The successful launch could strengthen Solana’s positioning as a high-performance blockchain for financial applications, where even small delays in settlement can create friction for users and institutions. However, the network’s ability to consistently achieve its targeted 150-millisecond finality under real-world conditions will be an important measure of Alpenglow’s long-term impact.
