Key Takeaways
- Coinbase added Ripple’s RLUSD across retail, exchange, and Prime, boosting U.S. distribution.
- RLUSD supports XRP Ledger, Base, and Ethereum and has grown to a $2.6B market cap.
- Its next phase is deeper use in trading, collateral, settlement, and DeFi across Coinbase.
Coinbase Gives RLUSD a Major US Distribution Boost
Ripple has secured one of its biggest distribution wins yet for RLUSD.
Coinbase has added the stablecoin across Coinbase Prime, the Coinbase exchange, and its retail app, allowing both institutional and individual clients to trade and manage RLUSD from the same infrastructure they already use for other cryptocurrencies.
Users can convert U.S. dollars and supported dollar-denominated stablecoins into RLUSD on a 1:1 basis. Support on Coinbase Global Exchange, including the ability to use RLUSD as collateral, is expected to follow.
The importance of the deal is distribution.
RLUSD will now be accessible through one of the largest crypto platforms in the U.S., giving Ripple direct exposure to Coinbase’s institutional and retail user base.
“Institutional appetite for compliant, high-quality stablecoins is clear,” said Jack McDonald, Ripple’s SVP of stablecoins, in the announcement. “The challenge is making them readily available through the platforms institutions already trust and use.”
For Ripple, the integration expands RLUSD beyond payments and settlement into a much broader trading and custody ecosystem.
For Coinbase, it fits its strategy of becoming an “everything exchange,” with Brett Tejpaul, co-CEO of Coinbase Institutional, adding that RLUSD access on Coinbase allows “clients choose the assets that fit their strategy, on infrastructure built for security and compliance.”
XRP Ledger, Base, and Ethereum All Get Support
The integration also gives RLUSD a wider multichain footprint.
Coinbase will support deposits and withdrawals on the XRP Ledger, Base, and Ethereum, making it easier for users to move the stablecoin between different blockchain ecosystems.
Ripple will also provide liquidity on Base to help deepen RLUSD markets there. That matters because stablecoin competition is increasingly about more than market capitalization. Distribution, liquidity, and interoperability are becoming just as important.
RLUSD’s ability to operate across three major networks strengthens its position in onchain finance.
RLUSD’s $2.6 Billion Market Cap Raises the Stakes
Since launching in December 2024, RLUSD has grown to more than $2.6 billion in market capitalization. Its adoption has spread across exchanges, payments, institutional markets, and DeFi.
The stablecoin is redeemable for U.S. dollars and backed by reserves including cash deposits, short-term U.S. Treasuries, and other cash equivalents.
That institutional positioning is central to Ripple’s strategy, and the Coinbase launch now gives RLUSD a much larger route into spot trading, prime brokerage, derivatives, and collateral use. In a stablecoin market increasingly dominated by distribution battles, that may matter more than another listing alone.
