The operation was led by a figure known as the “Crypto Godfather.” And it had nothing sophisticated about it. No exploits. No smart contract hacks. Just corrupt cops and physical intimidation dressed up in crypto clothing.

The Mechanism of the Shake-Down

The scheme did not need code. It needed a badge.

Michael David Coberg, 44, was an active LASD deputy and helicopter pilot. He used that position as muscle for Adam Iza, a crypto entrepreneur who called himself the Crypto Godfather. Iza paid Coberg to terrorize business rivals instead of taking them to court.

Two incidents defined the case.

In 2021, Coberg and armed associates confronted a victim over a financial dispute. His law enforcement presence validated the threat while Iza pressured the victim into transferring $127,000. The victim’s passport was taken on the spot.

In a separate plot, a victim was lured from Miami to LA under false pretenses, instructed to obtain narcotics, then hit with a staged traffic stop and arrest to destroy their credibility in a business dispute.

Coberg has been ordered to pay $127,000 in restitution. Prosecutors summed it up simply. He betrayed his oath for greed.

The broader lesson here is one the crypto space rarely talks about. Digital security means nothing if people know you have wealth. The threat does not stay on the blockchain. It moves to the real world.

The Crypto Godfather title was part of the problem. Flashing status in this industry attracts predators. In this case the predators had badges.

Keep your holdings private. If you are in a dispute over crypto assets, use legal counsel. The line between security consultant and co-conspirator in this case did not exist.

A Broader Crackdown on Enablers

Coberg’s sentencing is not a one-off. It is part of a pattern.

Prosecutors are no longer just chasing hackers and exploit developers. They are dismantling the human infrastructure behind crypto crime. The people who provide cover, enforce deals, and move money are all in the crosshairs now.

It is happening globally. The US Treasury sanctioning North Korean IT worker facilitators. India arresting key figures in the GainBitcoin Ponzi scheme. The DOJ going after domestic enablers who thought their status made them untouchable.

It did not.

Adam Iza, the Crypto Godfather himself, already pleaded guilty to conspiracy and tax evasion charges. He is awaiting sentencing now. Coberg’s 63 months sets a heavy benchmark for what comes next.

The physical layer of crypto crime is under siege. And the message from every jurisdiction is the same. No amount of status or legitimacy shields you anymore.
