Key Takeaways

  • New Jersey set a record with 18 Powerball second-tier winners on April 29, 2026.
  • New Jersey Lottery said shared number patterns helped create 18 million-dollar winning tickets.
  • James A. Carey said 3 $1M prizes remain unclaimed until the April 29, 2027 deadline.

New Jersey’s April 29, 2026 Powerball drawing didn’t deliver the $143.4 million jackpot to the Garden State, but it still minted a record 18 second-tier millionaires, including four $2 million winners who added Power Play. One of those stories reads like a glitch in the usual luck narrative: a player says they dreamed a set of numbers, bought a ticket the next morning, lost, and tossed the play slip onto a dresser. Six months later, the slip fell out during a shuffle of items, they replayed the same numbers, and this time it hit for $1 million. Lottery officials say the backstories have become one of the most memorable parts of that night.

State lotteries rarely feel like part of the tech economy, but they run on the same engines: probability, consumer behavior, and a constant stream of small digital transactions. New Jersey just offered a tidy case study. A single Powerball night produced a wave of second-tier millionaires, and one winner’s path to $1 million hinged on a dream and a forgotten slip of paper.

The April 29 drawing that turned into a state record

On April 29, 2026, New Jersey logged a state record: 18 second-tier winners (tickets that matched the 5 white balls). That stood out even in a busy national drawing with 89 second-tier winners overall, per the New Jersey Lottery’s May 13, 2026 press release.

The prizes split cleanly inside the state: 14 tickets paid $1 million, while 4 added Power Play and paid $2 million. The jackpot itself, $143.4 million, went elsewhere, split between winning tickets sold in Kansas and Indiana, including one sold at Al’s Supermarket in La Porte.

A dream, a dresser, and a second try

One of those New Jersey millionaires offered an unusually specific origin story. “I had this vivid dream where I was winning the lottery, and the numbers were crystal clear,” the unnamed player said in a New Jersey Lottery winner-stories release dated June 1, 2026.

The player bought a ticket the next morning using the dream numbers, lost, and tossed the play slip onto a dresser, then forgot about it. Six months later, while moving things around, the slip fell out. “Something just told me to try those numbers one more time,” they said, and the replay produced a $1 million win.

Why so many million-dollar tickets hit at once

The spike in second-tier winners wasn’t treated as a mystery inside the lottery world. Officials said many players selected numbers from a single vertical column on their play slips, a kind of human habit that can synchronize bets at scale. That helps explain how one combination can light up so many tickets, especially when a common selection pattern forms.

The winning numbers that night were 03, 19, 35, 51, 67, with Powerball 15, and a 2x multiplier, as detailed by the WDHA recap. It’s a reminder that in mass-market systems, user behavior can be as consequential as raw odds, isn’t it?

The unclaimed millions, and a one-year clock

As of June 1, 2026, 15 of the 18 New Jersey second-tier winning tickets from April 29 had been claimed, leaving 3 $1 million tickets outstanding. James A. Carey, Executive Director of the New Jersey Lottery, put it simply: “We can’t wait to meet our final three millionaires and hear their stories.”

Those winners have 1 year from the drawing date to claim their prizes, meaning the deadline lands on April 29, 2027.
