Key Takeaways

  • Coinglass metrics show bitcoin futures open interest at $54.82B, with Binance holding $11.24B.
  • Deribit options hold 288,409.93 BTC in calls, giving bulls 60.89% of open interest.
  • Deribit, Binance and OKX show Sept. 25 max pain near $70K-$73K, putting downside in focus.

Across major futures venues, 695,020 BTC in open interest translates to $54.82 billion, according to this weekend’s derivatives data from Coinglass. Aggregate open interest slipped 0.26% over one hour and 0.38% over four hours, but remained 1.15% higher over the last day. That combination looks more like traders shaving exposure around the edges than heading for the exits.

Binance Leads the Pack as $54.82B Stays in Play

The largest crypto exchange by volume, Binance, controls the largest slice, carrying 142,500 BTC, or $11.24 billion, representing 20.5% of tracked futures open interest. CME follows with 116,040 BTC worth $9.15 billion on Sunday and a 16.69% share. CME’s footprint matters because it’s a clean gauge of institutional positioning.

MEXC holds another $5.01 billion, followed by Bybit at $4.58 billion and Gate at $4.57 billion. OKX accounts for $2.79 billion, Bitget $2.16 billion, and Kucoin $1.62 billion. Most major venues lost open interest over the last four hours this Sunday, while BingX jumped 34.50% and Bitunix climbed around 1.29%. Apparently, not everyone got Sunday’s memo to lighten the book.

The broader futures market has rebuilt considerably from its June lows. Historical data shows bitcoin futures open interest falling toward the mid-$40 billion range in June before clawing back above $54 billion in late August as bitcoin recovered by breaking $81,000. The important detail is that leverage has returned alongside price, leaving considerably more capital exposed if volatility suddenly wakes up.

One popular crypto X account this weekend wrote:

“Leverage is piling up over the weekend. This won’t end well.”

Calls Own the Board, but Fresh Money Is Buying Protection

Options numbers carry an equally loaded setup. Total bitcoin options open interest has climbed toward roughly $44 billion this weekend, recovering sharply from around $25 billion in early August. The latest call-versus-put breakdown shows 288,409.93 BTC in calls against 185,234.42 BTC in puts, giving calls 60.89% of outstanding open interest versus 39.11% for puts.

Trading volume, however, tells a less comfortable story. During the latest 24-hour period, puts accounted for 54.49% of options volume, with 12,380.77 BTC traded, compared with 10,339.78 BTC in calls. The established book clearly favors upside, while newer flows are leaning defensive. That reads less like champagne popping and more like traders checking where they left the fire extinguisher.

Deribit’s largest individual open-interest contract is the Sept. 25 $70,000 call at 11,018.2 BTC. It is followed by the Dec. 25 $80,000 call at 8,590 BTC, Sept. 25 $85,000 call at 8,373.9 BTC and Sept. 25 $100,000 call at 7,323.4 BTC. A Sept. 25 $70,000 put holds 7,227.3 BTC, putting serious positioning on both sides.

CME adds another institutional wrinkle. Expiration-stacked metrics show CME options open interest rebuilding into late August, with contracts expiring within one to two months forming the largest visible block. Its position-stacked side also shows calls expanding sharply during the final August sessions, while puts remain present but command a smaller share of the newest bars.

Max Pain Leaves Bitcoin With a September Minefield

Then comes max pain, the strike where aggregate option-holder losses would theoretically be greatest at expiration. The largest bitcoin options exchanged owned by Coinbase, Deribit, shows near-term max-pain levels spanning $70,000 to $80,000, including roughly $78,500 for Aug. 31 and Sept. 1, $75,000 for Sept. 4 and $70,000 for Sept. 25. Longer-dated Deribit expirations gravitate near $70,000, except Nov. 27 around $80,000.

Binance and OKX paint a similarly messy picture. Binance max pain sits near $78,500 for Aug. 31, $75,000 for Sept. 4, $80,000 for Sept. 11 and Sept. 18, and approximately $73,000 for Sept. 25. OKX puts Aug. 31 near $78,500, Sept. 4 around $75,000, Sept. 11 near $80,000 and Sept. 25 around $70,000.

With bitcoin at $78,425, derivatives traders are hardly positioned for a sleepy September. Futures exposure remains elevated, calls control the outstanding options book, puts are winning the latest volume battle, and several max-pain levels sit below spot. The positioning says traders still want the upside, but enough money is buying downside protection to make September anything but a victory lap.
