Key Takeaways

  • Buterin says Ethereum’s future involves dividing work and checking proofs instead of repeating every calculation.
  • Ethereum’s 2030 vision sketches finality of eight to 32 seconds, but that’s a future design.
  • Buterin sees Hegota, planned for 2027, as likely Ethereum’s last fork built around familiar technology.

Ethereum Starts Outgrowing Its Original Label

Ethereum spent years pursuing a seemingly awkward ambition, spread computing across a decentralized network, then make that arrangement efficient. Now, co-founder Vitalik Buterin says modern cryptography is changing the arithmetic, allowing participants to divide work without everyone repeating every calculation.

In a Sept. 27 essay and accompanying X post, he describes a network moving beyond its familiar blockchain identity. “It’s really not just a blockchain anymore,” he wrote on X. Wait, what? The ledger stays, but more verification, privacy and processing would depend on cryptographic tools and decentralized infrastructure working around it.

Split the Work, Then Check the Proof

The old arrangement was straightforward, if laborious. Ethereum network participants downloaded blocks and repeated their calculations to check that everything followed the rules. Buterin’s future architecture increasingly substitutes cryptographic proofs and samples of the underlying data for that full replay.

Think of checking evidence that a calculation was performed correctly instead of doing the entire calculation again. That changes the economics of splitting tasks among participants who don’t automatically trust one another.

Earlier efforts ran into trouble because assigning work was easier than reliably checking it. Committees introduced expense, delays and their own failure risks. “Back then, this was not viable for one primary reason: the missing ingredient was verification,” Buterin wrote.

His argument is that modern cryptography supplies that ingredient. Decentralization could consequently help the network store more data and process more work simultaneously, giving an old Ethereum ambition another shot.

Developers Get a Different Bill

Buterin also throws cold water on the idea that all computation should carry the same practical cost. Under the architecture he describes, developers would have stronger incentives to organize applications into separable tasks, allowing work to happen simultaneously or be removed before reaching a block.

An application that bundles everything into one sequential transaction would face higher costs than one designed to let independent pieces proceed together. Some proofs and signatures would be combined before inclusion, reducing what the chain must handle directly.

“When building applications, structure of computation is starting to matter a lot,” Ethereum’s co-founder wrote. The chain would increasingly concentrate on changes that require shared ordering, while the surrounding infrastructure handles more of the supporting work.

The proposed user experience includes stronger transaction-inclusion guarantees, more privacy and lighter node requirements. His 2030 comparison sketches finality, when transactions become settled, at roughly eight to 32 seconds. Those figures describe a future design, not a capability the essay establishes as available today.

The Last ‘Normal’ Fork Has Plenty Riding on It

Buterin identifies Ethereum’s Hegota, planned for 2027, as likely Ethereum’s last “normal” fork, meaning one whose technology would look familiar to someone from 2015. Subsequent changes would put advanced proofs, formal verification, and highly optimized consensus at the center of development.

There’s still trouble brewing in the engineering. Proofs must become sufficiently efficient and safe, while coordinating access to enormous amounts of stored application information presents what Buterin considers the more complicated systemic challenge.

His longer-range discussion includes obfuscation, a cryptographic approach that could eventually support broadly programmable encrypted computation. He presents that as a possibility, not a prerequisite for the nearer-term transformation.

He also draws a firm boundary around the speed pitch. “Ethereum itself will never have latency that competes with servers, but infrastructure built around it could.” The world computer’s next act depends partly on what happens outside its blockchain.
