Key Takeaways

  • Researchers at the Chinese Academy of Sciences’ Institute of Metal Research redesigned the electrolyte in an alkaline all-iron flow battery, which then ran more than 6,000 charge-discharge cycles with no measurable capacity loss. That works out to roughly 16 years of daily use.
  • Iron costs about 80 times less than lithium as a raw material, and the water-based electrolyte can’t catch fire or explode. Both points matter for grid-scale project costs and site risk.
  • Low energy density rules the design out for EVs and consumer devices. It targets stationary grid storage, a market where China already controls about 90% of energy storage battery supply.

The next battery story out of China is not about juicing an EV or shaving millimeters off a phone. Researchers at the Institute of Metal Research at the Chinese Academy of Sciences say a redesigned electrolyte for an alkaline all-iron flow battery held up for more than 6,000 charge-discharge cycles with no measurable capacity decay, a lifespan outlets equate to roughly 16 years of daily use. That matters because iron, as a raw industrial material, is reported to cost about 80 times less than lithium, turning the electrolyte into a very different economics conversation for grid-scale storage. The work, published in Advanced Energy Materials in 2026, also leans on a water-based electrolyte system that reporters note cannot catch fire or explode, underscoring why OilPrice cast it as a credible threat to lithium-ion’s grip on stationary storage.

A battery story that matters to the US grid

If you follow US clean energy buildouts, you already know the bottleneck is not only generation, it is storage that can sit in the field for years. A team at the Institute of Metal Research, part of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS), just put fresh weight behind a different approach: an alkaline all-iron flow battery (AIFB) aimed squarely at stationary, large-scale power storage.

The chemistry tweak, and the 16-year claim

The work was published in 2026 in Advanced Energy Materials, in a paper titled “6000-Cycle Stability” by Wei et al. The headline result is blunt: the redesigned electrolyte sustained more than 6,000 charge-discharge cycles without measurable capacity decay, a figure that multiple outlets describe as roughly 16 years of daily use.

CAS went further in a news release, saying: “The battery operated stably for over 6,000 cycles with no capacity decay. After 6,000 cycles, there was no precipitation, no accumulation of by-products and both the structure and reversibility remained intact.” That kind of long-haul stability is exactly what grid operators tend to prize, even when the technology is bulky.

Why iron keeps showing up in these conversations

The economic argument starts with the raw material. Coverage notes that iron costs roughly 80 times less than lithium, making the AIFB’s electrolyte far cheaper than lithium-based alternatives, as summarized in an April 28, 2026 report. For US utilities staring at multi-hour storage proposals, the difference between a commodity metal and a scarcer battery input can reshape project math.

Then there is safety. The AIFB uses a water-based (aqueous) electrolyte system that researchers and reporters note cannot catch fire or explode, unlike flammable lithium-ion electrolytes. That does not automatically make it cheap at the installed-system level, but it changes the risk profile for big, fenced-in sites near substations.

A challenge to lithium-ion, but not for your car

Flow batteries typically have lower energy density than lithium-ion systems, which is why this design is positioned as unsuitable for electric vehicles and consumer gadgets. It is a grid tool, not a mobility one, and the “16 years” framing only makes sense in that stationary context.

Strategically, it lands in a market already shaped by China’s scale: OilPrice noted China produced over 80% of the world’s lithium-ion batteries in 2025 and controls roughly 90% of the energy storage battery market, while also framing the work as pressure on the $150 billion lithium market in its 16-year roundup. The question for US energy buyers is simple: if iron can last that long on the grid, how quickly does it become a line item in American storage bids?
