London Metal Exchange Tokenizes Reserves to Unlock New Financing

Key Takeaways

  • DeFi generated $65 billion in 2026, accounting for roughly two-thirds of total blockchain revenues.
  • Robinhood Chain’s tokenized stock volume topped $13 billion in Q3, signaling growing RWA adoption.
  • Nasdaq’s 23-hour trading plans could accelerate institutional blockchain adoption in 2027.

DeFi/Finance Dominates as Blockchain Revenues Fall 30%

Blockchain revenues declined about 30% year over year, in line with bitcoin’s average price, according to a new 1KX report. While blockchain revenues are projected to reach $100 billion, they fall short of the approximately $140 billion recorded in 2025. However, as in 2025, onchain and offchain user-paid fees accounted for 50% to 60% of total revenues, with the remainder coming from other income.

For the fourth consecutive year, the decentralized finance (DeFi)/Finance category dominated, generating $65 billion in revenue in 2026, driven largely by offchain fees. Its revenue share now stands at two-thirds of the total, a significant jump from 52% in 2022, when total revenues topped $82 billion. Within this category, centralized exchanges and derivative venues accounted for 42% of revenue, followed by stablecoin reserve income and yields at 29%, onchain user-paid fees at 13%, asset management and ETF-related fees at 7%, and prediction markets at 6%.

Blockchain infrastructure revenues fell to $22 billion, their lowest level since 2020. Actual transaction fees paid now represent less than 3% of all blockchain revenues. The remaining sectors accounted for $12 billion, led by consumer applications at 9%.

Institutional Adoption Defies Broader Revenue Decline

Meanwhile, bucking the broader market decline, revenues tied to institutional adoption and economic use grew to represent 30% of total blockchain revenues—with economic revenues overtaking infrastructure in the third quarter for the first time. In the first half of 2026 alone, economic adoption revenues rose by $2.9 billion year over year.

This growth was led by a $1.6 billion surge in utility sector fees. This included $1.4 billion from prediction markets, which expanded from near-zero revenue last year toward an estimated $4 billion this year, and $200 million from credit cards, trade finance, and other payment solutions. According to Boston Consulting Group, businesses were involved in roughly 60% of stablecoin transfers in 2025, and while stablecoin supply growth has recently stalled, payment volumes reached all-time highs.

Additional drivers included $1.1 billion from increased real-world asset (RWA) tokenization and related trading and lending fees, as well as a $250 million rise in stablecoin issuance fees and reserve income—which remains the largest single component of broader economic revenue since the Federal Reserve began raising interest rates in 2022.

RWA Trading Surges as Tokenized Stocks Gain Ground

RWA trading volume gained widespread momentum, generating an estimated $1 billion in trading fees during the first half of 2026 at an average fee rate of 7 basis points. RWAs accounted for 18% of all perpetual volume in the third quarter, with tokenized stocks representing 55% of perpetual volume—overtaking gold, which led last year—while oil perpetuals led among commodities. Pre-IPO listings also emerged as a new asset class, led by SpaceX.

Al Qureshi, CEO and co-founder of Black Lake Digital Markets, attributed the surge in RWA trading volumes despite declining cryptocurrency prices to the different economic forces driving the two markets. He explained that RWA activity is often linked to the performance and yields of underlying assets, while cryptocurrency valuations tend to reflect broader perceptions of monetary risk, inflation and speculative demand.

“RWA trading volumes are tied to real assets that, in many cases, are driven by yield. Cryptocurrency prices are, in fact, expressions of currency views on default risk, inflation, and novelty. This orthogonality works as long as things are relatively stable,” Qureshi said.

He compared the relationship between RWA markets and cryptocurrencies to that between U.S. Treasuries and the U.S. dollar, noting that the two can move independently until significant shifts in financial conditions cause their performance to converge.

“For instance, spread widening in Treasuries or curve steepening could point to a run on the currency, or vice versa,” Qureshi explained.

Himanshu Sahay, co-founder and chief revenue officer at Arch Lending, said RWA trading gives investors exposure to markets with distinct price drivers, allowing demand to remain resilient even during crypto market downturns. Sahay added:

“The next thing to watch is whether that activity carries over into lending. When people can borrow against these assets as well as trade them, they become far more useful.”

RWA adoption expanded rapidly alongside key market shifts and regulatory developments. Tokenized stock volume on Robinhood Chain surpassed $13 billion in the third quarter, with more than 70% occurring while U.S. stock exchanges were closed. Across all blockchains, spot volume reached approximately $50 billion.

Institutional Adoption Poised to Drive 2027 Revenue Recovery

Meanwhile, Collin Sellers, vice president of solutions at Nuva Labs, identified limited access to capital and insufficient integration with broader financial markets as major obstacles to the growth of tokenized credit. He explained that while credit portfolios can be represented onchain, they often remain difficult to trade, finance or use as collateral beyond the initial investment.

Sellers argued that greater composability, allowing tokenized assets to interact with lending markets and investment strategies, could expand investor demand and unlock additional liquidity. However, achieving this requires reliable asset valuations, transparent risk information and counterparties willing to provide financing.

He highlighted the role of vault infrastructure in helping issuers and asset managers structure and manage tokenized credit products, while marketplaces can connect these assets with investors. Ultimately, Sellers emphasized that sustainable liquidity depends not merely on technological integration but also on attracting sufficient capital and market participation.

Looking ahead to 2027, the report projects institutional adoption and broader economic applications to drive the next growth cycle, offsetting infrastructure declines. Total revenues are projected to rebound toward prior highs as 24/7 equity trading, expanded RWA tokenization, and institutional stablecoin payment rails transition from early adoption to mainstream financial integration.

Furthermore, as regulatory frameworks finalize, institutional participation is anticipated to account for a dominant share of total market revenue.
